SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Some 40,000 tons of industrial waste were dumped in landfills over many years. Until very recently, this constituted the environmental liability of the Petroflex industrial plant at Duque de Caxias. Deciding on the final disposal of these wastes is merely one of the environmental problems that the Company has had to deal with over the past decade. During this period it developed a series of programs designed to reduce atmospheric emissions as much as possible, as well as discharges into water bodies, largely through recycling liquid and solid wastes. The most obvious results of all these efforts by year-end 2001 is that the environmental liability of the Duque de Caxias was reduced to zero.
