SOLID WASTES

Through its innovative solid wastes beneficiation program implemented in 1997, by 2002 Petroflex had eliminated all environmental liabilities built up during forty years in operation. Thanks to their high calorie power, these solid wastes were included in the energy matrix of a cement plant, burned in its furnaces during the co-processing stage.

Through these efforts, the company was awarded the 1999 Ecology Prize by the National Confederation of Industries (CNI - Confederação Nacional da Indústria) at the State level, in the Solid Wastes Management category.

In 1997 these solid wastes were transferred to the Plastimassa plant in the Magé municipal district (Rio de Janeiro State), where they will be processed as fuel for the cement plants furnaces in Minas Gerais State.

In 2001, at Caxias, a total of 40,000 tons have been disposed, bringing its environmental liability down to zero. The areas where these wastes were dumped are being steadily reclaimed, as there was no contamination of the water table.

At Cabo, all wastes and garbage are separated at their points of origin, ensuring correct collection and disposal without overloading the final waste disposal system. The quality of this water table is also monitored through piezometric wells.

The solid wastes produced by the Triunfo plant are treated at this Petrochemical Complex. Today its environmental liabilities are reduced to 1,500 tons, with final disposal already defined. The Petroflex plant at Triunfo constantly cleans up and monitors the water table.
